The Sacred Valley
Terminillo"...Francis, sanctified Assisi, his native home, but shone in the Province of Rieti because of his special fondness for it and because of the splendour of the many miracles he performed here."
Anonymous of Rieti, Actus Beati Francisci in Valle Reatina, P 7. Edited by A. Cadderi, Assisi, Edizioni Porziuncola, 1999

The Sacred Valley is a plain, almost circular in shape, closed in by hills and mountains such as Terminillo. The four Franciscan Sanctuaries are situated within this natural amphitheatre and together form a cross.

Many reasons lead Saint Francis to Rieti and one of them is surely the breathtaking charm of its nature. When taking the Walk, you will be enraptured by the pure, uncontaminated beauty of the landscape that has not changed greatly since Francis walked upon it.

The plain is very fertile and it continues to nourish its people as it did centuries ago. During the summer you can admire the expanse of land as it changes into a yellow sea of grain.

The hills are covered in centuries-old woods dominated by oaks, chestnuts, holm-oaks and hornbeams. At higher altitudes fir trees, larches and hollies prosper.

The plentiful natural waters in the Sacred Valley are famous for their crystal clear purity. The deep blue Velino River flows through the entire plain and enters the city of Rieti bringing with it trout and mallards. The streams, like the Turano, flow rapidly among rocks and woods. The earth also sprouts spectacular springs like the Santa Susanna.

The Sacred Valley was originally occupied by an enormous lake, Lake Velino. In 271 B.C., the Romans reclaimed the land. The only evidence left of that great expanse of water is the enchanting Lakes Lungo and Ripasottile Natural Reserve. Here, among the thick reeds and white water lilies, you can admire egrets, grey herons, mallards and many other animals.

Pilgrim's Tales
The comment by Marco from Mantova.
Hi, I’m Marco from Mantova. I took the Walk from the 19th to the 23rd of August from Rieti to Rieti visiting the four Sanctuaries. I left on my own. I had already taken the Santiago Way last year and so I threw myself into this new adventure. My reckless spirit... freccia
