How to Get to Rieti

We've outlined all the ways to get to Rieti and the Sacred Valley that were so dear to Saint Francis.

By Car

    From the North
    Take the A1 Firenze-Roma highway, exit at Orte, continue along the Orte-Terni and then take the SS79 towards Rieti.

    From the South
    Take the A1 Napoli-Roma highway, at the San Cesareo do not go towards Rome but continue for Firenze never leaving the A1. Exit at Fiano Romano and continue along the SS4 Salaria towards Rieti.

    From the East
    Take the A24 Teramo-L'Aquila-Roma highway, a little after Tivoli take the A1 towards Firenze, exit at Fiano Romano and continue along the SS4 Salaria towards Rieti.

    From Rome
    From the Ring Road, take the A1 Firenze-Roma highway (exit 10), exit (before the Roma-Nord off ramp) at Fiano Romano and continue along the SS4 Salaria towards Rieti.
    Rieti is roughly 75 km from Rome and can be reached in about an hour even if you decide to take the SS4 Salaria the entire way (from Villa Ada in Rome

    Note! Timetables change often and should be checked by calling the COTRAL toll-free number.
    COTRAL transit offers services that leave from the Tiburtina railway station in Rome and arrive at the Rieti railway station (end of the line).
    Travel time is about 1h and 40 minutes.
    Tickets can be purchased at the Tiburtina railway station and at the Rieti railway station.

    From Rome there is a metro line that goes to Fara Sabina (Passo Corese), with connecting COTRAL bus services to Rieti.
    The service departs from various stations in Rome including Tiburtina railway station at intervals of 15 minutes.

    Rieti can be reached by rail from Terni or l'Aquila on the Terni-Rieti-L'Aquila-Sulmona railway line.

      If you leave from Rome you may find the map of the underground system useful (.pdf, 730 Kb).
    In particular the FR1 line that runs from the "Leonardo Da Vinci" airport (Rome) to the Fara in Sabina railway station.
    The train runs every 15 minutes and makes stops at Ponte Galeria, Muratella, Villa Bonelli, Magliana, Roma Trastevere, Roma Ostiense, Roma Tuscolana, Roma Tiburtina, Roma Nomentana, Nuovo Salario, Fidene, Settebagni, Monterotondo, Pianabella di Montelibretti. The head of the line is at Fara in Sabina.
    - Tickets can be purchased at automated machines in the National and International Arrivals lounges at the airport and at the railway stations.
    - Running times are subject to change on holidays.
    - Departure times are always indicated at the railway stations.
