Celebrating Saint Francis on October 4th at Greccio

Antoniazzo Romano, Saint FrancisHe spoke to the doctor: “Please, brother doctor, tell me that death is imminent: it will open the door to life!” And to the brothers: “When you will see me at death’s door, place me naked upon the earth as you saw me the other day, and after I am dead, let me lay there long enough to have travelled a mile comfortably”.
His time came and having completed the mysteries of Christ, he flew happily towards God.

These are the words in Tommaso da Celano’s Vita seconda that describe the last moments in Saint Francis’ life. It was October 4th 1226.
Although almost eight centuries have passed, Francis’ life and death continue to spark the same intense emotions, reflections and transport as they did during his lifetime.

In keeping with Franciscan humility and simplicity, a ceremony dedicated to the message of the Ragged Saint will be held to remember and celebrate the feast day of the Saint of Greccio.
The celebration will begin at 3:30 pm on Sunday October 3rd. The day will open with a concert performed by the Rivodutri band and at 4:00 pm a procession from the Greccio Sanctuary will lead pilgrims into the heart of the woods where Francis retreated to pray. A celebration Mass will follow.
In the evening, all eyes to the sky to watch the spectacular fireworks show.
